Blueprint: Company to honor exec at Relay

Representatives with Power Partners will pay tribute to the company's late co-owner Sherrie Ford at tonight's Clarke County Relay for Life at the Athens YMCA.

Ford died in April of an aggressive stomach cancer diagnosed just months before.

The Relay for Life, a festival-like, overnight event, serves as the American Cancer Society's major fundraiser for the communities it serves. Money raised at the relay goes to research and victim support.

Relay teams raise money in a variety of ways leading up to the actual event, when team members walk around the track to honor cancer survivors, caretakers and victims. Individual teams will conduct their own fundraisers throughout the Relay, which also includes live music from Athens bands, games and more.

"It's almost like a carnival atmosphere," said Dave Esary, chairman of the Clarke County Relay for Life. "It's really amazing to see how that one central theme of fighting cancer goes across the whole county from kids to adults; everybody knows somebody affected by cancer."

The Relay starts at 6 p.m. on the Y's track with a kids walk, followed by an opening ceremony at 7 and the first official lap when cancer survivors are invited to walk.

Small and large businesses alike join in the effort and that impresses
